Premature loss of the scalp hair
may be hereditary or associated with some illness.
Hair transplant is done to restore
the missing hair by transplanting one’s own hair taken from back of the scalp.
Several new techniques have evolved in the field of hair transplant.
Hair transplant involves removing a strip of hair bearing skin from back of
head; each hair or a unit thereof containing 2-3 hair roots is then separated &
transplanted at recipient site (follicular hair transplant). Effect comes after
6-9 months.
Over the past few years unit follicular hair transplant has emerged as the most
reliable hair transplant procedure of hair transplantation surgery. The reason
behind follicular hair transplant becoming popular as the hair transplant
procedure producing most natural results is also the same.
The success rate of follicular
hair transplant is nearly 100%.
Transplant operations are performed on an outpatient basis, with mild sedation
and injected topical anesthesia, and typically last about four to five hours. Your scalp
will be insensitive to pain, but you may be aware of some tugging or pressure.
Remember, there are limits to what can be accomplished. An individual with very
little hair might not be advised to undergo hair replacement surgery.
You should plan to take it easy for a day or two after the procedure and arrange
for assistance if you think you'll need it.
The larger magnification of 4x (Zeiss magnification loupes ) helps us to avoid
the damage to the follicle unit and prepare the follicular hair transplant with
the lesser amount of scalp skin.
After the grafting session is complete, the scalp will be cleansed and covered
with gauze. You may have to wear a pressure bandage for a day or two.
Results of the surgery:
During the first ten days,
nearly all of the transplanted hairs, inevitably traumatized by their
relocation, will fall out ("shock loss"). After two to three months new hair
will begin to erupt from the moved follicles. The patient's hair will grow
normally, and continue to thicken through the next six to nine months. Any
subsequent hair loss is likely to be only from untreated areas. Some patients
elect to use medications to retard such loss, while others plan a subsequent
transplant procedure to deal with this eventuality.
The transplanted hair grows normally and the stigma of being called a bald
person is over. The transplanted hairs however lack the thick density, as the
donor area at the back is not sufficient to cover the entire head.
