It happens to all of us; as we age, excess skin and fat accumulate
around the eyes.Untreated, the excess skin and fat can lead to a
heavy feeling around the eyes. There is even difficulty in keeping
the eyes open. In the lower eyelids, it can give rise to unsightly
bags and a general appearance of tiredness.
With cosmetic eye surgery (blepharoplasty), this appearance
can be improved to get a youthful look.
A cosmetic eye surgery can last
one to two hours and it takes less if only lower or upper lids are being
treated. Usually you can go home the same day.
The
surgery can be performed either using a local anesthesia, in which the operated area
is numb but the patient is awake, or a general anesthesia,
where the patient is asleep. For surgeries on upper lids, incisions are made
into the natural wrinkles of the eyelid and the laughter lines in the eye
corner. For surgeries on lower lids, incisions are made right under the
eyelashes.
Excess skin, fat and muscle are then removed and
fine stitches are used for closing the cut. The stitches are usually removed
within 2-7 days after the surgical procedure.
