      FAQs

Who is a candidate for cosmetic surgery?

The best cosmetic surgery candidate is someone with realistic expectations and an understanding of the limitations set by medicine, technology, and each patient's own body. Good candidates have a strong self-image, and well-developed reason for pursuing a plastic surgery procedure. They are looking for improvement of a specific physical trait, knowing that while this positive change may enhance their self-image, it will not change people's perception of them. Dangerous motivations for cosmetic surgery would be purely doing it to gain popularity, or attempting to reverse recent life crises.

Is there a "right" age to pursue plastic surgery?

There is no specific rule as to the right age for plastic surgery. In fact, the appropriateness of a certain procedure is determined more on a person to person basis, looking at the individual's unique body type and aging process. Of course, there are age tendencies for certain procedures. Facelifts generally are not performed on patients under 30 years, as mini-lifts or laser procedures might be suggested instead, but this is not a rule.

What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is performed to enhance or change a healthy, normal, functioning part of the body. Nothing but the patient's desire for physical improvement necessitates cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery, however, is intended to correct a physical abnormality caused by a birth defect, disease or tumor, physical trauma, or infection. The goal of reconstructive surgery may be to restore function or to achieve physical normality.

How much pain is involved in Cosmetic Surgery?

Each procedure carries a different level of discomfort, and requires different methods of anesthesia. In most situations, the patient's preferences for safety and comfort, as well as personal pain threshold, can help determine what type of anesthesia will be used. Very minor, non-invasive surgeries might involve a topical anesthetic, while minor invasive surgeries may call for local anesthetic or local combined with sedation. In more extensive surgery, general anesthesia is usually used.

Will I have a scar after plastic surgery?

Scarring is inevitable after healing of a wound, however a very fine lined scar placed in the correct orientation may be virtually imperceptible. A plastic surgeon spends years trying to master the techniques to place scars in the most desirable location. Plastic surgeons will try to make incisions in areas that will not show, like under undergarments or along natural creases. Scars will normally fade over time, but completely scarless surgery is still a distant dream.

The severity of the scarring varies from person to person. Some other factors on which the resultant scar depends are:

Tension - more tension equals wider scars. This plays a factor in the areas listed under location. Incisions across areas with lots of motion (the knee, wrist, & shoulder) all tend to be wide.

Genetic predisposition - sometimes it's the genetic fault. Around 15% people display profound inflammatory responses (keloidal tendencies) with exaggerated scarring from anything.

Medical conditions - diabetics, obese patients, those with arterial disease, and gastric bypass patients all have baseline wound healing problems to some degree.

Age - the inflammatory response of normal healing varies with age. The  response in children and teens to injury can be exaggerated scars as their immune systems tend to be "peaking" during those years. Alternatively, things done to the face of 70-90 year old, that would disfigure younger patients will often not even find a scar.

Does plastic surgery always involve skin grafting?

A qualified plastic surgeon uses judgment to decide the best way of reconstructing a defect. Skin grafting is only used when it is the best way of closing a wound or defect. Infact, skin grafting is considered to be a second choice if the wound or defect can be closed/corrected primarily using the adjacent skin. A skin graft may appear to have poor color match and texture compared to the native skin, but with careful selection of a skin graft donor site these problems may be minimized.

Do we always use Plastic during plastic surgery?

No.  The word "plastic" in "plastic surgery" doesn't imply the use of the material that we call plastic.  "Plastic" comes from the Greek work translated "plastikos," which means to mold or to form.  The plastic mug in your bathroom got its name from the same root: the material called plastic can be molded or formed.  So the "plastic" in "plastic surgery" doesn't mean that a plastic material is used; it means that we are trying to change something's shape or form.

Can plastic surgery make me look like someone else?

No, not yet.  All we can really do is make modest changes to some specific facial features, in the direction that the patient desires, but large global changes are beyond the capabilities of Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons.Making someone look like someone else is science fiction for a while yet.

Is Cosmetic Surgery very expensive?

No, Cosmetic surgery is not very costly. The expenses involved for any procedure depends upon the institution, the infrastructure required, material used, nature of the procedure, anesthesia and the operating surgeon. As compared to most other super specialties, a routine plastic surgery procedure requires minimal instrumentation and infrastructure but high degree of innovative surgical skill.
